March 7: New infant pines

When I reached the top of the terrace stairs on my way to class this morning, waiting for me was a line of tiny pine seedlings growing from a seam in the paving. They weren't there Friday. They won't be there long, I suspect; there's not much to nourish them in that crack. But now I know it's time for the little tree seeds that fell from opening pine cones last year to germinate, and I can look for them in the pots on my balcony, too.
