January 18: Birds at the pond

The morning I was leaving the farm to come back to the city, I hiked down to the pond for another look around. It was still quiet, with patches of snow remaining, and the surface of the water was frozen but looked slushy. I did see a killdeer on the other side of the pond, out walking on the edge of the ice. When I moved closer, it flew away giving a quick "dee-dee-dee" call as it flew. I stood there for awhile longer, giving things time to settle down, and eventually just a few feet away from me, in a tuft of grass out in the water, a tiny bird appeared. I'd never seen one like it before, but I knew it would be easy to identify by the red spot right on the top of its head. So handsome and at the same time really cute. It was a ruby-crowned kinglet, which I think is a wonderful name.

Tonight when I went out to empty the trash, I heard tiny sounds which I couldn't tell what they were, so I stopped on the stairs and listened. It was birds, still calling and singing after dark. :)
