October 2: Laundry day
Oct. 2nd, 2010 09:47 pmThis is one of my favorite things: a fall day, almost too warm in the sun, a cooling breeze toward evening in the long shadows, and a wind kicking up that lets you know when night falls it will be chilly... and to make it all perfect, laundry drying out on the line.

I might not take such pleasure in hanging my laundry out if I had to do it for a whole large family, but I think it would still be one of my favorite chores. It's goodness. You have clothes. They are clean. You don't need a machine to make them dry and fresh-smelling, you have the breeze. And you create a miniature-scale drama every time you have to shake the ants out them before you bring them back in.
When I went out to hang up the clothes this evening, one of the horses was in the yard, grazing her way slowly up toward the house. I put the clothes aside and walked out to meet her, calling to her before she saw me. She raised her head, evaluated the situation, turned her back on me and ambled back toward the pasture and through the swinging gate. She's a good old mare. Doesn't even need to be caught.
