October 21: Autumn finch
Oct. 21st, 2010 09:01 pmThere haven't been many birds around the feeders lately. I assume the hummingbirds have migrated, even though the weather is still warm; normally it would be getting chilly at night by this time of year. The other birds probably have a feast of autumn seeds to feed on. I did see a house finch today, though.
I see them most during the winter, but checking back through my photos, there were quite a few in late July/early August. If I recall correctly, that's the time during the summer when the heat really starts to crank up. The plants and trees have finished with their spring and early summer fruits, and they get overstressed by the heat and go dormant until fall, when some of them can produce more. So for the birds, that may be a lean time.
