September 26: Crows in a muffled morning
Sep. 26th, 2010 07:49 pmWhen I drove to the farm Friday night, it was very late. By the time I crossed the county line to my home county, in the foothills, the moon was high and there was fog rolling through the fields and valleys. When the road was higher than the pastures, I could see the moonlight on the surface of the mist like a floodlight on a white lake.
Sunday morning was drizzly, breezy, cool enough for a light sweater. I went out very early to do the shopping, and by the time I was pulling back in to the driveway at the farm, the crows were awake and everywhere. Congregating on the road, calling from the trees and all across the valley. With the cloud cover and the damp ground, other sounds were muffled, like when you drop a glass on carpet, but the crow calls seemed louder because of it.

I'm trying something new here: I've registered on an audio site that I hope will let me upload and embed sound clips. If the embedding doesn't work, though, the file should be playable on my page here. "Crows on a September morning" is the file, and I recorded it with the memo feature on my phone. You'll be able to tell it wasn't done on professional equipment! They don't really get loud until near the end of the recording.
