October 13: Trumpetvine seeds

The trumpetvine seed pods are opening now, after being on the vine from mid summer on. Here they are in August, behind the blossoms:



Now those green pods are cracking lengthwise to reveal thin sheets of seeds pressed in like layers of filo dough.

That's a cool looking seed. My grandmother had a trumpetvine, and the bees loved it. :)

After I saw how many seeds were in each pod, I stopped being surprised at how easily trumpetvine spreads! You're right, it really is great for bees. Also wasps and hummingbirds. Ridiculously easy to grow; the problem is not letting it get out of control. :)
