November 18: Goldenrod over the wall

neverspentBack in late August, I noticed flowers and shrubs growing up over a wall on a building I teach in, casting their shadows on the wall behind the stairs as the sun was rising. One of the weeds was goldenrod, I was sure, but as September and October wore on and it didn't blossom, I started to doubt myself. The goldenrod I see at the farm has already started turning to brown fuzz, and this one tall stalk over the stairs on campus hadn't given a hint of blooming.
But in about the first week of November, it finally did! Very slowly, just thin lines of gold along the slender branches at the top of the long, tall stalk. Little by little the blossoms have swelled and gotten heavier, bending the main stalk down over the stairs as if it were bowing to the reflection of the sun in the opposite wall.
