December 19: Fox squirrel
Dec. 19th, 2010 05:42 pmAs in most places it lives natively or has been introduced, the Eastern gray squirrel is the most abundant squirrel in my area. We do also have fox squirrels, though, and I often see them foraging among the oak and hickory trees in the lower part of my parents' front yard. They don't look a whole lot different from gray squirrels, but if you know what to look for it's easy to tell the difference. Fox squirrels are larger and heavier, have smaller ears, and the tail and underside of their body is more red-tan where the gray squirrel's is white.
